Southern Living Big Book of Cupcakes by Jan Moon is a sequel to her previous Big Book of Cupcakes.
0 out of 10 stars. I was literally shocked when I opened this book. There are supposed to be 150 cupcake recipes in this book. There are only 8! The reviews on Amazon are obviously fakes. I’m just shocked at the number of fake reviews.
The author owns a cupcake bakery where she takes basic cake and frosting recipes and adds decorations to make them attractive. Translating that into a book without giving away her secrets is impossible, so she took four basic cake recipes and four basic frosting recipes, then added other “toppings” to them to make the other cupcakes in this book.
For example, she takes the basic lemon cupcake and lemon frosting and adds basil to make Lemon Basil Cupcakes. She adds coconut for Lemon Coconut Cupcakes. She adds ginger for Lemon Ginger Cupcakes. And the list goes on. I expected 150 unique cupcake recipes. Not eight basic recipes I already have.
One of the reviews on Amazon, the one that hooked me into buying this book, claimed it had an excellent recipe for wedding cake and to-die-for frosting. There is no such animal in this book. There’s only basic white cake and basic white frosting and both taste kind of gross, similar to plastic.
People, you can find better recipes than what’s in this book on the internet. If this is southern cooking my name is Mary Todd Lincoln. Not.
0 out of 10 stars. I purchased a cupcake mini-book like the ones at the checkout at the grocery store and it had more cupcake recipes for one-fourth the price. Pass on this one. It’s pointless. The author didn’t even incorporate techniques for decorating. Just very basic stuff that you can find on the back of premixed cake boxes. 🙁
