Side Effects is a 2013 murder mystery and psychological thriller.
0 out of 10 stars. This is a creepy little movie about two dangerous psychiatrists who use an unhappy wife as a pawn in their games to make a ton of money on pharmaceutical stocks. Shameful. Who writes this garbage?
Emily and Martin Taylor are a happily married NYC socialite couple until Martin goes to prison for insider trading. Emily hates him after that and plots murdering him (instigated by her shrink). She gets put on a drug trial so she can claim the drug made her do it. When the drug’s stock price plummets, its competitor’s stock price soars and she gets rich (along with her shrink). But the doctor who prescribes it becomes a pariah and loses all of his drug sponsors, so he has her committed and keeps her drugged. He threatens her with shock treatment and a lobotomy (removal of part of the brain) until she finally agrees to get a confession from her shrink (who plotted the whole thing). Once she does this, he keeps her drugged anyway and never releases her, breaking his word and becoming one of the most vile human beings I’ve seen on TV.
The two shrinks were disgusting. They split the stock money and kept Emily a prisoner in her own body.
