The Great Hack is a 2019 Netflix documentary.

10 out of 10 stars.  Very watchable and very depressing.  This should be required viewing for every person in the world.

The theme of this documentary is that democracy no longer exists.  In 2014, a British think tank named Cambridge Analytica changed all of that.  What they did was hire a psychology professor at Cambridge University to devise a series of questionnaires that would reveal a person’s innermost views and biases.  They sold this data to FaceBook and then went around the world making contracts with dictators to sell this data, along with FaceBook ads for the purpose of altering the elections around the world.  The most famous elections they altered were the U.S. election in 2016 in which Donald Trump was voted in as President by 70,000 votes in 3 swing states and the Brexit election in the United Kingdom.  Both resulted in catastrophic failure of democracy in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Following those two successes, Cambridge Analytica and FaceBook sought and made contracts with dictators in Trinidad & Tobago to alter the election there, Brazil to alter the election there, and Myanmar to instigate a genocide against an entire race of people.  How did they do this?  They found the weakest minded individuals across the world, the “Persuadables” who are easily swayed to become frightened and hateful and can be mobilized to act.  So basically FaceBook weaponized the data it received from Cambridge Analytica to kill democracy across the world and replace it with a world filled with fear and hate.  This was the testimony given to Parliament in the United Kingdom and to Congress in the United States.

My biggest complaint is that the “heroes” in this documentary, American David Carroll and British Carol Cadwalladr (from the Guardian) continue to use FaceBook and Twitter as though they didn’t learn a thing.  No one suggested confiscating FaceBook and making it a public utility like the Social Security Administration who actually safeguards our SS numbers.  No one suggested bringing criminal charges against all of the individuals involved either.  It’s as though the very people who exposed this betrayal didn’t themselves get it.

Alexander Nix is the CEO of Cambridge Analytica.  He altered the presidential campaign in 2012 for Barack Obama and in 2016 for Ted Cruz then went on to alter the presidential campaign in 2016 for Donald Trump and to force the Brexit vote for Nigel Farage in the United Kingdom.  Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s Campaign Manager, is the Vice President of Cambridge Analytica and taught the employees something called Breitbart, that society must be destroyed in order to be recreated.  His tactics are fear and hatred.

When Alexander Nix and Steve Bannon were promoting this chaos theory of destroying society by destroying democracy, Christopher Wiley and Brittany Kaiser were being recruited to work for them at Cambridge Analytica.  Wiley quickly became a whistleblower, revealing what Cambridge Analytica and FaceBook were doing.  Brittany Kaiser, waited several years until she was exposed by Wiley then she only revealed pieces of what she knew until she was in danger of being arrested with criminal charges.  While Wiley expressed remorse again and again, Kaiser did not and continued to spend the millions she earned while working for Cambridge Analytica.  For each contract she made between a dictator and FaceBook using Cambridge Analytica data she received a bonus.  She had a key to Steve Bannon’s personal townhouse in Washington D.C.  Why is she not in jail?

If all of this doesn’t terrify you, then you haven’t been paying attention.  Democracy has died.  So has Cambridge Analytica thanks to Christopher Wiley.  But FaceBook, an American company, is still there and it shouldn’t be.  FaceBook gave Cambridge Analytica the personal data of 87 million users.  For the past five years it has steadily displayed ads that inspire fear and hate.  Write your Congress person and demand they be closed down or turned into a public utility.

10 out of 10 stars.  You wondered how Trump managed to get elected.  This documentary explains it so even the uneducated can understand.  A better title for this would’ve been The Death of Democracy.
