Doodle Stitching: Embroidery and Beyond

Doodle Stitching: Embroidery and Beyond by Aimee Ray is a book more advanced than her first book.  This one includes crewel, cross stitch, sashiko, and other stitching types.

6 out of 10 stars.

This book was a big improvement over the last book, Doodle Stitching.  This one has more unusual stitches, cute transfers and patterns, and some interesting projects.

Stitches

  1. Cross stitch
  2. Bullion knots
  3. Couching
  4. Woven spider’s wheel
  5. Whipped spider’s wheel
  6. Buttonhole wheel
  7. Whipped stem stitch
  8. Threaded fly stitch
  9. Threaded running stitch

Unfortunately, like her previous book, the author doesn’t give all the steps to complete the stitch, only one step.  You’d be better off searching for the above stitches online and getting real instruction.  🙁

Crewel Stitches

The crewel section is much better than the embroidery section.

  1. Overcast stitch
  2. Trellis couching stitch

Other Stitches

  1. Sashiko stitch
  2. Shisha stitch
  3. Buttonhole connectors
  4. Buttonhole stitch
  5. Overcast stitch
  6. Padded stumpwork
  7. Wired stumpwork

Sashiko are long rows of the same stitch.  Shisha are buttonhole stitches used to make buttonholes, keep holes from getting larger in worn clothes, and for attaching little mirrors or objects.

There is a stitch glossary in the back with some of the stitches from the first book, Doodle Stitching.

Patterns and Transfers

On p. 24, there’s an entire page of miniature animals and trees.  Real trees, not the lollipop trees from her previous book.  On p. 36 is a cute little Candyland design with a cupcake and lollipops.  On p. 43 is a beautiful butterfly.  On p. 45 is a cute little owl.  On p. 59 is a cute little gingerbread house.  on p. 63 is a cute litlte tree with woodland creatures and unusual flower heads.  On p. 77 there’s a cute shisha nature banner.  On p. 84 there’s an adorable hanging lantern stumpwork design (filled embroidery).

6 out of 10 stars.  If you want to try one of the Doodle Stitching books, get this one instead of the first one.  This has more stitches, more projects, and cuter designs.
