The Bone Collector is a 1999 horror film starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie.
8 out of 10 stars. This one is terrifying and grotesque. Not for the squeamish.
It begins with a wealthy couple arriving at the airport in New York City and getting into a taxi with a mild-mannered driver. They’re tired and they both fall asleep. When they wake up they are nowhere near Fifth Avenue and are in an abandoned area of the old warehouse district. Then their nightmare begins.
Flash forward to the next day a beat cop named Amelia Donahie is the first cop to a crime scene, an arm sticking up out of the dirt near a railroad track. She quickly realizes there’s a body attached to that arm, buried underneath the dirt and there are clues left by the killer on the railroad tracks. She stops the oncoming train by standing in front of it with a flashlight. She pays the kid who found it to go get a disposal camera with a flash and then she takes photos with a dollar bill next to all of the clues and the arm for scale. That’s all something an experienced forensics expert would do, so when paraplegic ex-cop Lincoln Rhyme is assigned the case he has Amelia pulled off her usual beat and brought to work on the serial murder case.
The arm turns out to be attached to the rich man that was picked up from the airport with his wife and never made it to their home on Fifth Avenue. They’re given clues at that murder site in order to find the wife before she’s murdered too.
Lincoln has assembled a top notch crew of investigators. Before he had an accident on duty, he wrote the textbooks the forensics expert use in their classes. But Detective Cheney, the guy whose in charge of the murder squad, hates Lincoln and wants him off the case. Amelia ends up pitted between the two men.
Without giving away too many spoilers, the killer is someone Lincoln knows from his past and his goal is to ultimately shame and murder Lincoln. But Amelia is much smarter than she looks (literally).
Angelina’s not great, but not awful. Denzel is great as usual. Queen Latifah plays Linc’s nurse, Ed O’Neill plays Linc’s best friend, and Luis Guzman plays the technical guru. Michael Rooker plays the evil Detective Cheney and I won’t tell you the actor who plays the serial killer because that would give it all away. 😉
8 out of 10 stars. A great horror film to watch with friends. There is gore.
Now on STARZ.
