The 15 Best Halloween Movies

Every Halloween this group has a scary movie marathon.  This is what we’re watching this year.

Lady in White film review } Book Addicts

1. Lady in White 1988

A little boy is locked in an elementary school coat closet on Halloween and witnesses a murder.  As the murderer repeatedly tries to kill, he desperately tries to solve a decades old murder.

10 out of 10 stars.  Still scary after all these years.

2. The Fog 1979 (the original)

A coastal town celebrates its centennial as the ghosts of the men the founders murdered seek revenge on the town.

10 out of 10 stars.  Still scary after all these years.

3. The Halloween Tree 1993

Four children try to save their sick friend Pip as a mysterious figure takes them through history learning where all of our Halloween traditions began.

10 out of 10 stars.  A charming introduction to American Halloween traditions.  Taken from the novel by Ray Bradbury.

4.  Poltergeist 1982

The Freelings move into a beautiful new house in Cuesta Verde, California not realizing it was built on a graveyard.  Their daughter becomes trapped in another dimension inside the house and the backyard tree tries swallowing their son.  That’s just the beginning.

10 out of 10 stars.  Still terrifying after all these years.

5.  The Thing 1981

A Norwegian helicopter flies into an Antarctic science station shooting at a dog.  The helicopter crashes and they kill the Norwegian, but what they discover is that the dog was infected with alien DNA from a frozen alien the Norwegians unearthed.  One by one they’re turned into ghastly monsters.

10 out of 10 stars.  You’ll need a strong stomach to watch this.  Still scary after all these years.

The Thing 2011 movie review | Book Addicts

6. The Thing 2011

This is the prequel to the 1981 film.  A Norwegian scientist and his crew find an alien frozen in the Antarctic tundra and they make the big mistake of bringing it back to the science station.  One by one they’re infected with alien DNA that turns them into ghastly monsters.

10 out 10 stars.  They improved on the original which was hard to do.

Bram Stoker's Dracula movie review | Book Addicts

7. Bram Stoker’s Dracula 1992

Easily the scariest vampire movie out there and the best of all the Dracula films.  An attorney visits Transylvanian Count Dracula to help him acquire land in England.  Dracula, however, meets the attorney’s fiance and believes she is the reincarnation of his dead wife.

10 out of 10 stars.  From vampires crawling on the ceiling to flying witches this film is terrifying.  Don’t watch it alone.

8. The Fly 1986

A scientist working on a teleportation device accidentally splices his own DNA with that of a fly that stowed away in the device.  Slowly he begins turning into Brumblefly, a half human, half fly monster.

10 out of 10 stars.  Truly terrifying.  Don’t watch this alone.

9. The Omen 1976

While traveling through Rome, the U.S. Ambassador to Britain’s pregnant wife goes into labor and gives birth to a son they name Damien.  As the people around them die one by one they discover their son was murdered at the Roman birth hospital and replaced with Satan’s son.

10 out of 10 stars.  Terrifying origin of the symbol 666 and Revelation 13:18.

Pet Sematary movie review | Book Addicts

10. Pet Sematary 1989

A child dies in a terrible accident and his parents bury him in the pet cemetery where all things buried return to life.  Only he’s not the same when he comes back; he’s murderous.

8 out of 10 stars.  Scary but it’s starting to show its age.

6 Souls movie review | Book Addicts

11. 6 Souls 2010

A psychologist seeks to prove a man with multiple personalities is faking it and discovers instead that more than one soul is inhabiting his body.

10 out of 10 stars.  One of my all-time favorite films.

Signs movie review | Book Addicts

12. Signs 2002

A widowed farmer and reverend finds crop circles in his fields and his youngest child claiming there’s a monster on the roof.  Having lost his faith, he doesn’t see the signs as they unfold and finds his family in the middle of an alien invasion.

10 out of 10 stars.  One of my all-time favorites.

The 13th Floor movie review | Book Addicts

13. The 13th Floor 1999

A scientists’ boss is murdered and all clues point to him as the murderer.  It isn’t until a beautiful woman enters his life that he realizes his world is not what it appears to be.

10 out of 10 stars.  An intelligent thriller for science fiction fans.

Fallen movie review | Book Addicts

14. Fallen 1998

A cop finds himself being stalked and framed for murder by a fallen angel.

10 out of 10 stars.  This one will give you nightmares.

Halloween movie review | Book Addicts

15. Halloween 1978

What would Halloween be without the classic?  A seventeen year-old girl is stalked by the famous murderer from their town, Michael Myers, when he escapes from the mental institution where he’s incarcerated on Halloween night.

8 out of 10 stars.  A classic but it shows its age.
