Gothika 2003 film movie review | Book Addicts

Gothika is a 2003 horror film starring Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr. and Charles S. Dutton.

8 out of 10 stars.  Ignore the negative reviews.  This movie is terrifying.  There’s an uncut version that will really terrify you.

Miranda Gray is a psychologist working at a mental hospital for the criminally insane.  Her husband Doug is the head psychologist.  When the film begins Miranda is speaking to one of her patients, Chloe who is played by Penelope Cruz.  Chloe tells her a very terrifying story of being raped and then tells her it happened last night.  Since Chloe was in her locked room alone last night Miranda assumes she’s unreachable and a compulsive liar.  Little does she realize Chloe is telling the truth.

Miranda leaves work that night in the pouring rain and approaches a detour in the road.  Sheriff Ryan, who happens to be her husband’s best friend and fishing buddy, tells her to drive the route past their fishing shack.  So she does and almost hits a beaten woman standing in the middle of the road.  She drives off the road, crashes her car, and then goes to help the poor girl.  Then she wakes up 3 days later as a patient in the hospital accused of murdering her husband and butchering him to pieces with a huge axe.

SPOILERS FOLLOW.  What Miranda comes to realize is that she is being possessed by the dead girl whose ghost she encountered on the road on that night.  That girl is the daughter of the hospital’s CEO who supposedly died of a suicide three years ago.  Only she didn’t commit suicide.  She was brutally raped, tortured, filmed, and thrown off a bridge alive.  She possessed Miranda and viciously murdered Doug because he was one of her rapists and murderers.  The other is none other than Doug’s fishing buddy, the Sheriff.  And the Sheriff, who has a creepy tattoo on his chest, is the one entering the hospital each night and savagely raping Chloe.  By the end of the film Miranda eventually escapes the hospital, is led to the fishing shack by the ghost, and finds the last girl Doug and the Sheriff raped and tortured, still alive.  But it’s a long scary road getting there.

8 out of 10 stars.  I would’ve given this 10 stars, but Robert Downey Jr was horribly miscast in this role and it ruined parts of the film.
