The Closer was a TV series that began in 2005 and lasted for seven seasons. Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson is head of the Priority Murder Squad which investigates priority murders in the Los Angeles area.
10 out of 10 stars. This series was one of the best series on television. It started to go downhill at the end of season 5 and by season 6 and 7 had lost most of its fans, but the first five seasons were very well done.
Episode 1 Pilot
In episode 1 of season 1, the pilot episode, a famous reclusive software engineer is murdered. He’d been having a relationship with a devoted Christian secretary. When she learned he was really a woman hiding from the police, she murdered him. In her confession, she made it clear she’d rather be a murderer than a lesbian. 8 out of 10 stars.
Episode 2 About Face
In episode 2 of season 1, About Face, a famous model is murdered and her philandering actor husband is the prime suspect. The husband kept having affairs with women and telling them he’d leave his wife but she had an iron-clad prenup agreement that would destroy him. There was no prenup and he actually loved his wife. But his hairdresser mistress thought he was serious and murdered his wife by putting nicotine in her leave-in conditioner. 10 out of 10 stars.
Episode 3 The Big Picture
In episode 3 of season 1, The Big Picture, a young pregnant Russian prostitute is stabbed to death. With little effort they discover a second pregnant Russian prostitute was stabbed together a year ago and both of them were girlfriends of Nick Koslov, the illegitimate son of the Koslov Russian mob boss. He’s become a serial killer because, as an FBI informant, they keep giving him alibis for the murders he’s committed. So Brendan lets slip to his father’s attorney that he was being questioned by the FBI for 10 hours. 10 out of 10 stars. One of my favorite episodes of the series.
Episode 4 Show Yourself
In episode 4 of season 1, Show Yourself, an army sniper is stalking a Hispanic street gang who murdered his wife. 2 out of 10 stars. One of the worst episodes of the entire series.
Episode 5 Flashpoint
In episode 5 of season 1, Flashpoint, the clinical trial of a anti-depressant drug targeting teenagers who are drug addicts goes awry when the psychologist administering the trial is murdered. His assistant has been sleeping with the under-aged patients in the trial and he found out. 6 out of 10 stars.
Episode 6 Fantasy Date
In episode 6 of season 1, Fantasy Date, a Congresswoman’s daughter is violently raped and murdered because of a Jones list ad and a college hazing gone awry. It turns out her ex-boyfriend whom she dumped because he hit her, posted the ad asking for a man to rape her then he left the key outside of her apartment. 10 out of 10 stars. One of my favorite episodes.
Episode 7 You Are Here
In episode 7 of season 1, You Are Here, a judge is murdered during a custody battle and his autistic son comes under the custody of the Priority Murder Squad. The judge was a monster and using his power to get custody of the son whom he didn’t want and so his ex-wife killed him. 2 out of 10 stars. One of the worst episodes of the series.
Episode 8 Batter Up
In episode 8 of season 1, Batter Up, a gay couple are attacked leaving a gay bar. Since there’s been a rash of robberies of gay men everyone assumes it’s the thief. It’s actually the young man’s older husband. The victim had been having an affair and was leaving him. 6 out of 10 stars.
Episode 9 Good Housekeeping
In episode 9 of season 1, Good Housekeeping, the daughter of a Mexican housekeeper is brutally raped, murdered, and dumped in the LA River. When the team finds evidence that the girl was raped and murdered in the home of the billionaires her mother worked for, the rich mom flees with her teenage son, the real murderer. Brenda catches up to him in Mexico. Bad luck for him he sought refuge in the country of his victim’s birth and citizenship. 10 out of 10 stars. One of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
Episode 10 The Butler Did It
In episode 10 of season 1, The Butler Did It, the butler to a millionaire is found hanging in the mansion where he worked. Although it looks like suicide, the man’s advanced rheumatoid arthritis made this act impossible. The butler used to work for a billionaire named Dutton who married a young stripper and was about to disinherit his three adult children. He was murdered and the stripper took over the company, immediately selling it off which would’ve ruined the fortunes of the adult children and taken the career of the family attorney who ran the company. Yes, it was the family attorney. 6 out of 10.
Episode 11 L.A. Woman
In episode 11 of season 1, L.A. Woman, an Iranian billionaire, who is suspected of funding terrorists and on the FBI watchlist, is murdered by his wife and her boyfriend, his daughter’s doctor. 8 out of 10 stars. This woman rendered her husband’s bodyguard’s gun useless with super glue.
Episode 12 Fatal Attraction
In episode 12 of season 1, Fatal Attraction, a woman’s body is discovered which results in freeing the man who was convicted 12 years earlier of her murder. It turns out to be the shrink who helped the cops convict the innocent man. He’d been having an affair with the woman and she threatened to tell his wife so he killed her. 8 out of 10 stars.
Episode 13 Standards and Practices
In episode 13 of season 1, Standards and Practices, a philandering film producer who beats his wife is murdered by her famous pianist father. 2 out of 10 stars.
10 out of 10 stars. Police procedurals are popular because when written cleverly they’re very satisfying. This is one of those series.
